The Day We Argued About the Grass
Or in the “mouth of the south” The Day My Ass was Grass “
It wasn’t really about the grass.
But it felt like everything to me.
---
He stood there looking at the pond, seeing what it could be—
clean lines, trimmed edges, something that looked intentional.
Something that looked… finished.
And I stood there looking at the same water,
but I wasn’t seeing a project.
I was seeing a living thing.
The tall grass he wanted to cut back?
I saw protection.
I saw fish tucked into shadows,
dragonflies landing softly,
frogs hidden in the quiet places no one notices
until they’re gone.
Turtle heads peaking above the surface.
---
Order vs. Life
He wanted it to look better.
I wanted it to stay alive.
And somewhere between those two desires,
we found ourselves standing on opposite sides of the same truth.
Because the truth is—
what looks “better” to us
isn’t always what’s better for what we’re trying to control.
---
The Agitation We Don’t See….
Cut the grass, and the water changes.
The sun hits deeper.
The temperature shifts.
The small places where life hides… disappear.
The fish feel it first.
They move differently.
Hide less.
Stress more.
The ecosystem doesn’t scream when it’s disrupted.
It just… slowly stops thriving.
And that’s what I couldn’t shake.
It wasn’t just about appearance.
It was about agitation—
the kind you don’t see right away,
but you feel later when something doesn’t come back.
---
Why It Hit Me So Deep…..
I realized something standing there in that moment—
I wasn’t just protecting the pond.
I was protecting what God made without us needing to fix it.
Because how often do we step into something already working
and decide it needs to be reshaped
just so it makes more sense to us?
Cleaner.
Neater.
More controlled.
More… ours.
---
The Mirror I Didn’t Expect……. 🙇♀️
And then it hit me even deeper.
How many times have I done that to people?
Cut back the wild parts.
Trim what felt messy.
Try to make something look “better”
instead of honoring how it was designed to live.
---
The Conversation Beneath the Argument 😬
We weren’t really arguing about grass.
We were talking about:
- Control vs. trust
- Appearance vs. function
- Human vision vs. natural design
And maybe both of us were right… in part.
Because there’s a balance.
Stewardship matters.
But so does restraint.
---
What I’m Learning…..
Not everything that grows wild is broken.
Not everything that looks unkept is neglected.
Some things are thriving
because we haven’t interfered with them.
---
Beulah Land Truth…..
This land is teaching me things I didn’t expect.
That beauty isn’t always clean lines.
That life doesn’t always look polished.
That ecosystems—whether in water or in people—
need space more than control.
---
And Maybe That’s the Point…….
Maybe the pond doesn’t need to look better.
Maybe it needs to stay honest.
Alive.
Unforced.
Protected in the quiet ways that don’t photograph well
but sustain everything beneath the surface.
